What's Next?

Often, I am asked what my favorite bird is.  Like most experienced birders, I have a hard time answering that inquiry.  Sometimes, I would launch into a “the one that got away” story, much like an old fisherman would.  However, I find myself now thinking more about how to find and obtain a quality sighting of some bird I haven’t seen.

So, here it is.  What’s the next bird I want to see and add to my life list? Answer: the Cerulean Warbler.  The problem is this warbler is not abundant.  In fact it is listed as rare or, at best, uncommon on most checklists.  And since I live where I do, I have to rely on the vagaries of migration.  I peruse the rare bird alerts and listservs always hoping for a chance.  Then, it is scheduling and work that have to be “accommodated”.  Anyway, someday, someday…

Well, I’m also interested in what might be next on your list.  It might be fun to share such.  Let me know, if you like.

Back to the Field

Uppies are being heard overhead.  Black & White, Yellow Warblers and a Canada are showing up at birdbaths. Orioles and Blue-Gray Gnatchaters are passing through.  The regulars are giving way to migrants.  That means it’s time to grab your gear and head to the field, forests, and ponds.

More Summer Fun

It’s the Dog Days of Summer.  Still, there’s plenty of good birding to be had.  Just keep the birdbath clean and full and see what comes to call.  For instance, this female Painted Bunting made an appearance at a friend’s and posed for photos.

You might keep an ear peeled to the sky as well.  Friends and colleagues are reporting Uppies (Upland Sandpipers) overhead headed south.

So, don’t put away the binoculars or the camera.  And if you need some good optics, consider this.

Myiarchus

Surprise!  A bright summer day was made better and brighter when we noticed this Great Crested Flycatcher in the oaks on the edge of our property behaving as flycatchers do.  True to form, it would sit fairly high up, dart out and catch an insect and back to the perch.

This photograph was snapped (with more luck than skill on my part) just as the bird was shifting its perch.  Notice the upright posture characteristic of this group.  Bright yellow belly, gray head, throat and chest, large bill and rustic red tail—identifying marks of this flycatcher.

Summer birding can be fun.
