Look What's Abroad

Enhanced View

Several days ago, while taking a break in the afternoon,  I watched this Broadwing fly into the back of the property.  This is one of my favorite hawks.  It's one of the smaller hawks, easily recognized by its tail and, in flight, its pointed wings.  It's diet consists of small mammals, reptiles and insects.  By the way, we have an abundance of small mammals and lizards.

This is a juvenal recognizable by its black moustachial streak.

Feed the Birds This Fall

Feed the Birds
Especially During Fall Migration

Millions of birds of many species, big and small, are on their way to their winter grounds.  We can help many along the way by offering food and water on their route.  The journey is long and arduous.  We help the birds and in return get a show not equaled.

Mother and Child

A recent trip to Canada this summer had us hoping to see a variety of wildlife.  Moose was on the list, of course.  One rainy morning we headed to Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park.  On our way in we spied this cow and calf foraging in the bogy ponds to the side of the entrance road.

It is astonishing how big these animals are.  You have to be impressed by the power and weight these creatures possess, especially when watching them turn and maneuver in these watery environs.
